Company History

Engineering excellence through over three decades of continued growth.

First established in Nelson in 1993, Diverse Engineering quickly established a reputation for quality and capability throughout the marine infrastructure of Port Nelson and beyond, also attracting marine engineering projects from across New Zealand. Scope of work extended beyond marine to industrial and general engineering for clients in agriculture, horticulture, winemaking, construction and more.

Diverse Engineering’s Hydraulics and Pneumatics division previously held the Nelson franchise for ENZED including its ‘Hose Doctor’ brand, but has since refined its operations. With the establishment of its own non-ferrous (bronze/aluminium) foundry, the company produced custom cast propellers of up to 1800 diameter under the brand name N&B (Nader & Biddel) and earned a significant reputation for high quality in specification, design, casting, repair and rebalancing.

The Company has grown, to now offer one of the most-capable engineering facilities in the top of the South Island. Our extensive port-side facilities cover some 8,000 square metres with 7,500 square metres of covered workshops - with a significant investment in the tooling and heavy equipment required for demanding jobs.

In 2020, the Company together with its subsidiaries was purchased by Mr. John Ashmore, an experienced engineer. Under its new management, Diverse Group has witnessed significant project success, consolidating its position as Nelson’s leading marine and industrial engineering firm - and leveraging its relationships and client base across New Zealand and internationally.

The company is highly capable in both marine and general engineering fields – covering new installations; maintenance; plant shut-downs; large machining jobs and specialist repairs to large fabrication projects.  Diverse Engineering can offer a complete project management service, through trusted relationships with companies providing electrical engineering, electronic supplies, marine paint, insulation, refrigeration and more – creating integrated solutions for any project.

Through a combination of its highly skilled personnel; extensive facilities; investment in equipment and deep experience, Diverse Engineering offers a very high level of time-critical service, from the time of tender through project duration and beyond – proven through a myriad of successful projects.
